Social networking to replace email by 2014

The business benefits of social software platforms will lead to email being replaced as the primary means of communication by 2014, according to analyst Gartner.

Increasing business use of tools such as Twitter and Facebook has resulted in more demand for such systems, says the firm, which predicts that 20 per cent of organisations will use them as their key communication medium by 2014.

Greater security, the availability of the so-called “white-labelled” social networks and more tolerance from organisations allowing use of personal accounts at work are among the factors influencing the business uptake of such tools, says the study.

Zealous Interactive, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Zealous, Inc. (OTCBB: ZLUS), announced today that its premiere portal, TheAdultSpot.com, has launched its 3D virtual social network providing users with a unique interactive and shopping experience. Members of TheAdultSpot.com can socialize with others as avatars in a 3D virtual reality space, known as MMOR (massively multi-user online reality) and not be limited to only a flat screen, text environment that may be boring and restrictive.

Membership is free. However, there are special features in the 3D world reserved for VIP paid membership. Users can interact with old friends or meet new people and participate in various activities including dancing, karaoke, watching a movie, shopping, or dining with someone special at a favorite restaurant. There are no boundaries in this virtual world platform provided by the partnership of TheAdultSpot.com and Utherverse Digital, Inc.

"TheAdultSpot.com users are in for a shock," said Brian Shuster, CEO of Utherverse Digital, Inc. "The synergy of our 3D technology with the leading adult social network is going to give users the kind of experience that they will be telling their friends about for years to come."

A survey of 500 companies found a 70 percent jump in spam and malware attacks via social networking sites in 2009, according to a new report from security firm Sophos.

Facebook topped the list as the perceived riskiest of the major social-networking sites, followed by MySpace, Twitter, and finally LinkedIn.

The Sophos report (PDF) said that more than 50 percent of the companies surveyed were spammed through a social-networking site last year and that 36 percent were hit by malware from such a site.

New Facebook craze can violate terms of service

If you're one of Facebook's 350-million-plus members, you've probably noticed a handful of people on your friends list changing their profile photos to pictures of celebrities, cartoon characters, Muppets, and other notable figures recently.

That's because an unofficial viral craze called "Doppelganger Week" has arisen on the social network. To participate, you change your profile picture to a celebrity or otherwise notable figure whom you resemble (or like to think you resemble).

Nobody's really sure where Doppelganger Week came from or who started it. It's particularly funny considering the recent emergence of more photos from the set of "The Social Network," a movie based on the origins of Facebook in which the company's early executives are portrayed by, yes, celebrity doppelgangers.

Mozilla revs up Firefox 3.6 speed by 15%

Mozilla's new Firefox 3.6 is about 15% faster than its predecessor, Firefox 3.5, but still is a slowpoke compared to the current speed demons, Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome, benchmark tests show.

According to tests run by Computerworld, Firefox 3.6, which Mozilla launched on Thursday, is the third fastest of five Windows browsers tested. Firefox renders JavaScript three times faster than Opera 10 and more than four times faster than Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 (IE8). It's also 14.5% faster than Firefox 3.5, the Mozilla browser that debuted in June 2009, a slightly larger speed increase than Mozilla has claimed.

But even with the JavaScript speed boost, Firefox 3.6 can't match Safari or Chrome. Safari is twice as fast -- and Chrome 4.0 nearly twice as fast -- as Firefox.

Apple's iPad Ready to Challenge the Kindle

apple ideapad, apple iphone nepal, apple ideapad in nepalNot only will the Apple iPad compete with the Amazon Kindle as an e-reader, but because Apple's new tablet will run iPhone apps, it will compete with Kindle's software, too. People who buy the iPad can choose to use Apple's new iBooks app and bookstore, or they could opt to run Kindle's iPhone app on the device instead.

The decision might just come to down to the book stores. The iPad's iBook store may be new, but the concept behind it is not; it's not all that different from Amazon's Kindle store for iPhone.

What's interesting is that the Amazon Kindle book store will work on the iPad from day one, albeit only in 2x mode (pixel doubling to fill the larger screen). However, as the SDK for the iPad is out today, Amazon has plenty of time to prepare its store for the larger screen of the iPad over the next 60 days.

Google has put its experimental Social Search feature into beta, claiming that it will help find results that are more relevant and personal to the user.

New features include a 'My social circle' button that displays the user's online contacts, as well as how they are connected, such as via blogs or personal web pages.

Social Search also works with Google Images, offering results pulled from a contact's Picasa albums, for example. These are presented under the 'Results from your social circle' banner.
