Man Arrested for Not Tweeting?

james

In a bizarre case involving teen YouTube sensation Justin Bieber and a riotous crowd of his fans, a record exec from Island Def Jam Records was arrested Friday for, among other things, failing to Tweet when told to by authorities.

When the Beiber event at Roosevelt Field mall became unruly (video below), police appealed to the artist’s label to send a Tweet telling the crowd to leave. When that allegedly didn’t happen, police arrested James Roppo, a senior vice president of Island Def Jam Records, for “endangering the welfare of a minor and obstructing government administration”.
An Associated Press feed reads:

Police arrested a vice president from Bieber’s record label, Island Def Jam Records, saying he wasn’t cooperating with attempts to disperse the crowd. James Roppo, 44, of Hoboken, N.J., was charged with a series of misdemeanours, including endangering the welfare of children and obstructing governmental administration.

Google Now Knows Your Heart Rate

james

Together with IBM, Google has launched a new Google Health initiative: the service will now be able to pull data directly from various medical devices: heart rate monitors, scales, blood-sugar measurement meters and so on.

That’s right, besides knowing pretty much everything about you, if you let it, Google can now pull personal information directly from your body.

There are very palpable benefits to this; for example, your personal trainer, doctor or nutritionist will now be able to remotely monitor how your body works. Eat too many donuts, and your insulin level will skyrocket; but if you give access to your blood sugar level monitor to your doctor, he’s going to have that “you’re not listening to me” frown next time you visit him.

Fishbowl Puts Facebook on Your Desktop

nirmalgyanwali

If you’re looking to bring Facebook to the Windows desktop and Twitter-centric update tools like Seesmic or TweetDeck are too limiting for you, you might want to take Fishbowl for a spin.

The app, built on Microsoft Silverlight 4, features photo browsing and zoom, photo slideshows, drag-and-drop image uploads and a completely ad-free way to browse and update the news feed. It works on XP, Vista and Windows 7, and just became available for download.

We’re already more addicted to Facebook than could be considered healthy, not to mention our affection for the Mac, but for those Windows users looking for a rich desktop experience, our friends at Download Squad are calling Fishbowl a “kick-ass Facebook client for Windows 7” – it’s free and built by Microsoft’s own developers, so it might be worth taking for a spin.

Wired Is Getting Ready for Apple Tablet

nirmalgyanwali

First, we heard rumors about the hardware. But you can only have so many rumors about hardware, so after a while everything we heard about Apple’s mythical Tablet merely resulted in one huge pile of colorful images, with little real substance.

The rumors about publishers who already have big plans for the device, however, are galore. The latest on the list? Condé Nast, which – according to All Things Digital – claims it’s preparing a digital version of Wired magazine for the Apple Tablet by the middle of next year, followed by its other 18 titles.

The interesting thing about this news is the fact that Condé Nast claims they haven’t talked to Apple, and they don’t even know the company has plans for such a device.

Microsoft Office 2010 Beta Released

james

It’s becoming more and more clear that Google is breathing down the neck of Microsoft when it comes to office and document-building software. Microsoft’s flagship Office software defeated Google Docs in our reader vote last week, but the margin of victory was surprisingly low. On top of that, Google is asserting that Google Docs will be a viable alternative to Office by 2010.

Microsoft isn’t taking this threat sitting down, though. In July, it announced Office 2010. It hosts an array of new features, with the biggest being a full online version of Docs, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Now the technology titan is taking the next step to bringing Office 2010 to market (and fighting back): the release of the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta.

New Visualizations to Google Image Search: Image Swirl

james

Google seems to have a renewed focus on improving the image search experience. For example, just last month Google Similar Images, which uses image recognition technology for filtering search results, graduated from Google Labs and became a default feature of Google Image search.

In an effort to continue down the better image search path, Google has just released a new Labs feature called Google Image Swirl. The new functionality is the result of computer vision research and clusters images into groups that you can search by way of an experimental new user interface.

Should Google Rank Sites Based on Speed?

nirmalgyanwali

Google’s Matt Cutts hinted this past week that Google is considering using a site’s speed as part of the algorithm that ranks the order of pages in its search results. Fast sites might rank higher, while slower-loading sites might suffer. It’s a proposal that’s proving controversial.

To quote from Cutts’ video interview on WebProNews:

“We’re starting to think more and more about should speed be a factor in Google’s rankings?

Obama: I’m Too Clumsy for Twitter

nirmalgyanwali

Speaking to a group of Chinese students in Shanghai, US President Barack Obama said he’d never used Twitter because he’s too clumsy to type on the phone.

The question he was asked, however, was far more important than his typing skills. In China, many of the services we use everyday – Twitter, Facebook, MySpace – are either heavily censored or completely blocked. One of the Shanghai students asked Obama “Should we be able to use Twitter freely?”

“Well, first of all, let me say that I have never used Twitter. My thumbs are too clumsy to type in things on the phone,” Obama replied. Fair enough, although as an avid BlackBerry user, he should be able to use Twitter without problems; we reckon lack of time is to blame rather than typing problems.
