10 Small Business Social Media Marketing Tips

james

Capacity – especially to plan and execute effective marketing strategies – is a big challenge for every small business. In this post, I’ll offer 10 suggestions for how small businesses can supercharge their marketing efforts by leveraging social media. For each suggestion, I will discuss a basic strategy – for those who simply want to get their toes wet, as well as an advanced strategy – for those who want to spend a bit more time and go a bit deeper in their social media marketing efforts. These tips are based on my experience leveraging social media marketing for my company, crowdSPRING.

I suggest you begin by outlining clear goals for your social media marketing efforts and figuring out how you’ll measure success. Once you’ve outlined your goals, let’s look at 10 great ways you can begin to leverage social media for your marketing efforts.

1. Facebook

Facebook (Facebook) offers exceptional, low cost marketing opportunities for small business. Facebook now has over 300 million users, and while that seems like an outrageous number for small businesses to be targeting, Facebook offers a very powerful platform on which to build a presence. If you’re not already active on Facebook; you should get started right away.

What is Social Networking?

nirmalgyanwali

Social Networking has become very popular during the past few years, but it can still be very difficult to understand for someone new to social networking. The open-ended nature of social networks add to this. Once signed onto a social network, having answered a few basic profile questions, it is easy to sit back and wonder what you are supposed to do next.

The easiest way to understand social networking is to think of it like high school. You had friends in school, and you knew quite a few people even if you weren't friends with all of them, but it's likely that you didn't know everyone.

If you ever moved to a new school -- or if you can imagine moving to a new school -- you start out with no friends. After attending classes, you start meeting people, and as you meet them, you begin associating with those that have similar interests.

Microsoft Still Isn’t Making Money on the Web

james

Microsoft is out with its latest earnings report, and while Wall Street seems to be responding favorably to the news, the company continues to struggle financially in the area we focus most on – the Web.

Specifically, the company’s online division reported a loss of $480 million in the quarter on revenue of $490 million. That’s less revenue than last year, when it pulled in $520 million, and a bigger loss as well versus the $321 shortfall in the first quarter of 2008.

Microsoft’s primary plan to reverse this trend is Bing (Bing), which it’s in the midst of spending $100 million to promote. There are a few reasons to be optimistic:

Twitter: 5 Billion Tweets Served

nirmalgyanwali

Twitter passed the one billion tweet mark back in November of last year. It took them less than a year to quintuple that figure: according to Gigatweet, Twitter has now passed the 5 billion tweet mark. Wow.

CNet reports that the 5 billionth tweet was delivered by one of Twitter’s (Twitter) initial loyal users, which seems fitting. Robin Sloan’s famed 5 billionth tweet read simply, “Oh lord.” It was apparently an unintentional, yet appropriate, religious moment.

Placing this milestone on the Twitter timeline makes the 5 billionth tweet appear all the more impressive, considering the service was only up to 1.6 billion at the end of April this year. That means about 3.4 billion tweets have been sent in about the past 6 months. Again, there’s a word for that: wow.

Search the Internet, Activate Your Brain: UCLA STUDY

nirmalgyanwali

Internet geeks would love to believe that their online behaviors actually stimulate the brain for the better. It turns out this notion may be a reality, at least according to a FOXNews story that recently surfaced.

Yesterday, findings from a UCLA study on internet behavior and brain activity were presented at the Societysocietysociety for Neuroscience in Chicago.

The study, which involved fMRI scans on 24 neurologically normal volunteers ages 55 – 78, showed that the portion of the group that had very little internet experience were able to change their brain activity patterns and increase function after just 7 days of one hour sessions searching the web.

Top 5 Famous Computer Hackers: From Conficker to the First Computer Virus

nirmalgyanwali

April 1 is the day the Conficker computer worm was supposed to do something terrible to millions of computers running Microsoft Windows -- though engineers were at a loss to say just what that something was.

Top 10 Computer Viruses and Worms

nirmalgyanwali

This fall marks the 40th birthday of the Internet, and to celebrate it, Symantec, the manufacturer of online Security software, has put out a list of the "Top Web Threats in the History of the Internet."

Symantec has an interest, of course, in bringing you this treat. The company hopes the memory of worms gone by will entice you to buy its software to protect yourself.

But it's still an interesting list, and you may enjoy arguing with it, suggesting additions, even remembering times past -- unless, of course, your computer was hit by one of these worms or viruses.

It's the digital equivalent of waving at someone from across a crowded room. And yet a Tennessee woman was arrested last month for "poking" another user on Facebook.

YouTube Reaches One Billion Views Per Day

nirmalgyanwali

When your website first reaches a million visitors, it’s a great milestone. However, one billion views per day can only be attained by the selected few, and YouTube is now one of them.

According to the official blog, YouTube (YouTube) is serving “well over a billion views a day”. That’s at least 11,574 views per second, 694,444 views per minute, and 41,666,667 views per hour. Imagine the web server farm that can withstand that much traffic, and then remember that YouTube is just one of Google’s (Google) many properties.

As we wrote earlier this week, YouTube still may not be making enough money to justify the 1.65 billion dollars Google has paid for it, but it definitely makes it up when it comes to visitors.
