Google’s Plan to Kill Internet Explorer?

james

Even though we firmly believe IE6 must die, it’s not going away any time soon. Now, however, Google has come up with a creative way to improve the experience of Internet Explorer users, without making them actually upgrade or switch to another browser.

The company has launched Google Chrome Frame, which is a plugin for IE that “seamlessly brings Google Chrome’s (Google Chrome) open web technologies and speedy JavaScript engine to Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer).” In other words, it’s all the behind the scenes features that make Chrome (Chrome) fast and allow it to support modern browser features, but within the IE interface.

Google (Google) explains Chrome Frame as mostly a developer-centric project:

Social Media Meets Online Dating: Gelato

james

Genius Idea: So long as love, relationships, and the Internet exist, there will be online dating. It’s a multi-billion dollar market, and while it’s done a lot of good for thousands, if not millions of couples, it’s still very inefficient, as we highlighted in HOW TO: Get More Responses in Online Dating.

Gelato is targeting this problem, and it’s doing it with social media integration. The service describes itself as “the FriendFeed (FriendFeed) of dating” because it pulls in your social media data from a variety of services in real-time in order to help you find your perfect match.

The first step in Gelato dating is to sign in with Facebook (Facebook) or Twitter (Twitter) (you can add these profiles, plus Netflix, Last.fm, and others later). Once you do that, you can import your information and go on the dating hunt.

What makes Gelato unique is its filtering and targeting ability. You can not only filter to find members of the opposite sex in a specific age range, but only ones that talk about video games, or are at the conference you’re at, etc. You can then view their profile, send them messages, and view their imported pictures.

This is a great twist to the online dating scene. Along with Thread, it is innovating in the dating space. It makes dating easier and perhaps, more likely to be successful.

Facebook can build your business, and now we can prove it: Sandberg's Presentation

james

Pretty much everyone in the audience at Sheryl Sandberg's talk on Tuesday morning as part of New York Advertising Week understood the meaning of the slide she displayed that read "Nielsen and Facebook are in a relationship." A nod to announcements on Facebook's homepage "news feed," the "in a relationship" phrase is now a recognizable slice of Internet culture--much as social network Facebook itself has become ubiquitous.

And Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer, hopes it will be just as ubiquitous in the advertising world. Her goal on Tuesday was to formally announce the social network's "strategic alliance" with data and audience measurement firm Nielsen, starting with the launch of a product called BrandLift, a market research tool that can measure audience response to advertisements on Facebook "in a matter of days."

Nielsen Online CEO John Burbank joined Sandberg on stage to detail the basics of BrandLift. "We recognize just how increasingly important Facebook is within the whole ecosystem of media," he said, adding that it would be "crucial in building (marketers') confidence in using the Internet as a tool."

Interlaced: Email and Social Networks

james

Despite Having 300 Million Members, Facebook is Not The Largest Social Network

In my opinion, online social networks have three distinguishing features:  1) They have profiles that enable people to express their identity 2) Ability for people to connect to these profiles 3) To be successful, there’s a greater value created by a group of people sharing than as individuals who do not.

This week, Facebook announced it has ballooned to 300 million users, far more than MySpace and certainly Twitter.  Yet, I want to assert that Facebook isn’t the largest social network, email is (we’ve talked about this before).  Recent numbers from Microsoft showed that the number of active users (although the definition of ‘active’ isn’t explained) exceeds 375 million users for Hotmail.

How to Use Facebook for Professional Networking

james

Ask anybody why they use Facebook, and most people will respond with reasons like staying in touch with friends, or being able to share pictures. Rarely does one’s professional life ever get mentioned when describing the social network. When it comes to business networking, LinkedIn tends to take all the thunder, and Facebook is generally written off as a place just for fun. Yet, perhaps that’s a mistake.

Facebook, after all, has 250 million active users compared to about 44 million for LinkedIn, and even though the atmosphere is clearly not as focused on business, there are still a ton of opportunities for professional networking that business users would be remiss to pass up. Once you look beyond the obvious social features like sharing pictures and poking friends, there are plenty of ways to tap into the professional community on the world’s largest social network.

In this post we’ll talk about how to setup your Facebook for professional use, how to find others to network with, Facebook features that work for professional networking, and ways to maximize the value from those features.

DISCLAIMER: As some of you have pointed out in the comments, downloading personal copies of YouTube videos is not supported by the YouTube Terms of Service, which states:

“You may access User Submissions for your information and personal use solely as intended through the provided functionality of the YouTube Website. You shall not copy or download any User Submission unless you see a “download” or similar link displayed by YouTube on the YouTube Website for that User Submission.”

It’s been a while since we looked at ways to download YouTube videos to get local copies of your favorite vids, and we thought it might be time to take a look at which options are still left standing and what new apps are worth checking out.

Google chrome is the fastest browser

nirmalgyanwali

Its been almost one year, the Google Chrome browser was launched to the world. And, in Google-like fashion, they took the unconventional route of announcing Chrome via comic book. Do you remember all of the discussion around Google’s decision to enter the browser market?

Now, Google is commemorating Chrome’s first birthday with some impressive stats. To get the full picture of where Chrome stands today though, we need to look at all the numbers. While Google’s commemorative blog post talks a great deal about birthday cakes and birthday balloons, the numbers-oriented company did reveal a plethora of interesting facts about the browser. Here is what Google shared:

“Since September 2, 2008, there have been:

Facebook Now Has Over 300 Million Users

james

While Twitter may be getting the majority of the press in the Facebook-Twitter competition, Facebook’s still the 800 pound gorilla in the room. Today the world’s largest social network made that clear by announcing that they now have more than 300 million users.

In a blog post, Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the social network’s constant growth and also announced that the company was self-sustaining and cash-flow positive, not a small feat by any means considering the relative trouble they’ve had monetizing. Being able to generate a profit opens the door to many possibilities, including an IPO.

The announcement also means that Facebook grew from 200 million users to 300 million in just over 5 months. It took 8 months to reach 200 million from 100 million, and it took years to reach the 100 million user milestone. This is a company that is growing faster, not slower, than its competition.

Log In to Facebook With Your Username

nirmalgyanwali

facebookFacebook has announced new feature today. From today you don't need to write your complete email address in the username box to access the account. You can type you username and password to enter.

If you don't have user name, you can create it from facebook.com/username.  Remember that Facebook username you rushed to get back in June? Over 50 million users have them, and now all of those people on Facebook can use their username rather than their email to log on to Facebook.com. You can skip typing the extra characters that comprise your email and instead utilize your shorter username to access your Facebook account.

The move makes sense – usernames are just easier to remember. It’s a common practice for many websites to allow users to log in with either an email or a username.

Students get Windows 7 for only £30

nirmalgyanwali

Microsoft is offering Windows 7 upgrades to students for only £30. The special offer runs until 3 January 2010, and entitles any student with a higher-education email address to purchase an upgrade copy of either Windows 7 Home Premium, or Windows 7 Professional.

Bizarrely, the software giant is offering both versions for exactly the same price, despite the fact that Professional offers additional features including remote desktop working.

One potential sticking point is that Microsoft is only offering download copies, which could cause problems for students trying to download the 3GB file on throttled broadband connections, or those with severe download caps.

What is Twitter?

james

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers.

Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. While the service costs nothing to use, accessing it through SMS may incur phone service provider fees.

Micro-blogging is defined as a quick update usually containing a very limited number of characters. It is a popular features of social networks like Facebook where you can update your status, but it has become best known because of Twitter.

A brief history of Facebook

james

Mark Zuckerberg, 23, founded Facebook while studying psychology at Harvard University. A keen computer programmer, Mr Zuckerberg had already developed a number of social-networking websites for fellow students, including Coursematch, which allowed users to view people taking their degree, and Facemash, where you could rate people's attractiveness.

In February 2004 Mr Zuckerberg launched "The facebook", as it was originally known; the name taken from the sheets of paper distributed to freshmen, profiling students and staff. Within 24 hours, 1,200 Harvard students had signed up, and after one month, over half of the undergraduate population had a profile.

The network was promptly extended to other Boston universities, the Ivy League and eventually all US universities. It became Facebook.com in August 2005 after the address was purchased for $200,000. US high schools could sign up from September 2005, then it began to spread worldwide, reaching UK universities the following month.

As of September 2006, the network was extended beyond educational institutions to anyone with a registered email address. The site remains free to join, and makes a profit through advertising revenue. Yahoo and Google are among companies which have expressed interest in a buy-out, with rumoured figures of around $2bn (£975m) being discussed. Mr Zuckerberg has so far refused to sell.

The site's features have continued to develop during 2007. Users can now give gifts to friends, post free classified advertisements and even develop their own applications - graffiti and Scrabble are particularly popular.

This month the company announced that the number of registered users had reached 30 million, making it the largest social-networking site with an education focus.

Earlier in the year there were rumours that Prince William had registered, but it was later revealed to be a mere impostor. The MP David Miliband, the radio DJ Jo Whiley, the actor Orlando Bloom, the artist Tracey Emin and the founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, are among confirmed high-profile members.

This month officials banned a flash-mob-style water fight in Hyde Park, organised through Facebook, due to public safety fears. And there was further controversy at Oxford as students became aware that university authorities were checking their Facebook profiles.

The legal case against Facebook dates back to September 2004, when Divya Narendra, and the brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who founded the social-networking site ConnectU, accused Mr Zuckerberg of copying their ideas and coding. Mr Zuckerberg had worked as a computer programmer for them when they were all at Harvard before Facebook was created.

The case was dismissed due to a technicality in March 2007 but without a ruling.
