YouTube today introduced a new content filter that helps users screen out offensive content, such as news videos with graphic violence, or sexually suggestive clips that don't exceed the service's Community Guidelines. The optional filter, named Safety Mode, also hides all text comments by default.

Google's YouTube has long banned family-unfriendly content, including pornography and videos that show gratuitous violence, animal abuse, underage drinking, and the like. But Safety Mode adds another layer of protection to keep kids and sensitive adults away from more provocative material.

When your website first reaches a million visitors, it’s a great milestone. However, one billion views per day can only be attained by the selected few, and YouTube is now one of them.

According to the official blog, YouTube (YouTube) is serving “well over a billion views a day”. That’s at least 11,574 views per second, 694,444 views per minute, and 41,666,667 views per hour. Imagine the web server farm that can withstand that much traffic, and then remember that YouTube is just one of Google’s (Google) many properties.

As we wrote earlier this week, YouTube still may not be making enough money to justify the 1.65 billion dollars Google has paid for it, but it definitely makes it up when it comes to visitors.

DISCLAIMER: As some of you have pointed out in the comments, downloading personal copies of YouTube videos is not supported by the YouTube Terms of Service, which states:

“You may access User Submissions for your information and personal use solely as intended through the provided functionality of the YouTube Website. You shall not copy or download any User Submission unless you see a “download” or similar link displayed by YouTube on the YouTube Website for that User Submission.”

Google announced Tuesday that its video site is opening the YouTube Partnership Program to the masses--provided they're packing a hot video.

YouTube said in a note posted to Google's blog that it will enable users who start accumulating lots of hits to generate revenue from their clips--provided they meet YouTube's terms.

"To determine whether a particular video is eligible for monetization, we look at factors like the number of views, the video's virality, and compliance with the YouTube terms of service," YouTube said in the blog. "If your video is eligible for monetization, you will receive an e-mail and see an 'Enable Revenue Sharing' message next to your video on the watch page, as well as in other places in your account."

Once a user says yes, YouTube goes to work selling advertising against the user's video.

Critics have always knocked YouTube's alleged inability to monetize the amateur-made videos on the site. Advertisers were afraid to get anywhere near this kind of content because it was too unpredictable. But that was when people thought YouTube would only serve ads against all of the content on its site.

The program gives YouTube the ability to choose only the choice material.

"It's taken us some time," YouTube wrote, "to build out the YouTube Partnership Program, our content-management tools and other infrastructure to handle expanding the (program) to so many individual users and videos."
